The Mental Load of a Demanding Sporting Schedule

For professional athletes, the pressure of sport is not only measured in matches won or performances delivered. Sometimes, it is measured in how little time there is to recover between them.

That has become an increasingly important player-welfare conversation in UK cricket. The Professional Cricketers’ Association’s research found that 67% of players were concerned about their mental wellbeing because of the cricket schedule, alongside 83% concerned about their physical wellbeing.

And the issue has continued into the 2026 season. In its response to the 2026 county schedule, the PCA raised concerns about a congested period at the end of the season, including six consecutive four-day matches within a five-week period. The association said the intensity raised concerns around player burnout and mental and physical wellbeing.

The challenge is not simply being busy. For athletes, demanding schedules can mean less time to recover, travel between fixtures, manage personal life and mentally switch off from the sport.

Wellbeing needs to be part of performance

This is where sporting organisations have an opportunity to think differently.

Supporting athletes’ mental wellbeing should not begin only when someone reaches breaking point. It can mean creating access to tools and support that help players manage stress, reflect, recover and maintain healthy habits throughout the season.

Where Shoorah comes in

Shoorah can provide an accessible layer of ongoing wellbeing support alongside the physical training, coaching and performance structures already in place.

Rather than wellbeing being another separate service, Shoorah brings wellbeing resources and support into one platform. Its wider B2B offering also combines wellbeing, rewards, benefits and engagement tools in one place.

For players, that means having somewhere to turn to throughout the pressures of a demanding season.

For clubs and sporting organisations, it creates an opportunity to make mental wellbeing part of the everyday player experience, not an afterthought.

Athletes need time to perform. They also need time and support to recover, reset and look after themselves.
