UK wellbeing app Shoorah has launched the country’s most advanced therapy tool to provide mental health support for its customers.

The company’s ground-breaking Shuru therapy tool is underpinned by OpenAI technology and provides guidance and support to people who may be experiencing challenges to their mental wellbeing and need someone to turn to*.

The tool operates within the Shoorah app, and customers can have an in-app chat with Shuru anytime, anywhere 24/7.

Users can select the emotion they’re feeling to get started and then ask Shuru – the Shoorah guru – anything they like. Shuru will reply with helpful questions, suggested actions based on proven wellbeing tools, or signpost to another agency for further support.

OpenAI

Shuru is the result of 14 months of wok by the Shoorah tech development team and almost 1million data sheets have helped create the tool. The Shoorah team has spent three months training the machine learning models and setting the OpenAI parameters and a handful of 3rd party APIs to develop Shuru.

Many months of testing have also taken place to ensure that the navigation and flow of the Shuru feature is as advanced and customer-friendly as possible. The tool works on any digital device and offers immediate support for people who need it, regardless of where they are or what time it is.

Shoorah provides more on-the-go wellness tools than any existing wellbeing app.

The tech start-up was co-founded by media personality Ferne McCann and her fiance Lorri Haines, who have both undertaken their own self-work journeys in recent years and have both attended therapy.

Stats from mental health charity Mind show that 1 in 4 people in England will have a mental health issue each year, yet almost a quarter of people who need mental health support have to wait 12 weeks to begin treatment.

Mental health support

Shoorah CEO Lorri Haines said: “The simple fact is that in-person therapy is not keeping up with demand and people are having to wait too long to talk to someone about how they’re feeling. Having somewhere to turn when you need guidance and support is crucial and thar’s why we’ve created Shuru therapy tool.

“Shuru isn’t a person but it’s a an amazing tool that has to be tried to be believed. We’re proud to be introducing such an advanced mental health resource – I believe this genuinely could be a life-changing tool for people who are struggling with their mental health but can’t afford therapy, or want access to someone to talk to anytime, or would rather not do in-person discussions.”

Shoorah will offer a Shuru through its app subscription which costs £9.99 per month – or 33p per day.

Shoorah Ferne McCann added: “I feel so passionately about the important role that Shuru can play in supporting the nation’s mental health in the future. We know therapy can be amazing but what’s also clear is that many people can’t afford a therapist and that even when they can, they’re just not immediately accessible.

“We wanted to provide something that can be accessed at the drop of a hat, is affordable to most people and gives empathetic and helpful support to help people feel better.”

The Shoorah app – which launched in May – offers 24/7 access to a series of features which allow users to do online journalling, gratitude practices, programme affirmations to suit them, create new rituals and habits, practice mindfulness, meditate, do breath work exercises and get advice from accredited wellbeing experts in a series of mini-pods.
