When the Next Contract Is Uncertain, Mental Health Matters Too

For professional footballers, the pressure does not always come from what happens on the pitch. Sometimes, it comes from not knowing what happens next.

In June 2026, the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) expanded its pre-season programme for out-of-contract players from 10 to 12 weeks, running through to 16 September. Alongside training and opportunities to connect with clubs, the programme provides wrap-around physical and mental wellbeing support.

That support is important because career uncertainty can bring a very different kind of pressure. The PFA itself highlights contract renewal, moving clubs, competing for a place and the possibility of not having a contract as situations that can contribute to stress and anxiety.

For players whose careers can change with one decision, maintaining mental wellbeing should be part of preparing for the next opportunity — not something considered only when things become overwhelming.

Where Shoorah can help

Shoorah can provide an additional layer of accessible, ongoing wellbeing support alongside the physical and performance support already available within sporting environments.

Through Shoorah, organisations can give people access to wellbeing resources, mental-health support and practical tools within one platform. Its wider B2B offering also brings benefits, rewards and wellbeing activities together, creating a more connected employee experience.

For players, that means having support they can turn to during periods of uncertainty, transition and pressure, rather than wellbeing becoming an afterthought.

For clubs and sporting organisations, it means taking a more proactive approach to player wellbeing — recognising that a player is a person first, with pressures that extend beyond performance.

The next contract might be uncertain. The support around the player shouldn’t be.
